The 2009 Cellink Premier League season concluded in exciting fashion on Friday evening at the Tucville ground with champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United edging past arch rivals Sunburst Camptown by the odd goal in three in a thriller.
The game saw the number one and two teams going after each other as if the league had just begun. The intense battle became a physical match up at some points with some players from either team taking their plays beyond the laws of the game prompting the standing referee Roy Mc Arthur to issue three red cards apart from six yellows.
BK International Western Tigers ended their on a high with a rousing defeat of Flamingo 5-0, Michael Henry (15 & 41) and Maxwell Pellew (27 & 55) banging in a double each, the other goal came in the 60th via a defence error.
Camptown started the game in aggressive style as they took the charge to Alpha. The Campbellville unit with Nigel Codrington leading their offence created early chances but failed miserably in the attacking third.
Their lack of focus in finishing eventually cost them the game as Alpha kept a cool head in defence and sprung the surprises in attack to sink the first goal in the 12th minute, Kelvin McKenzie calmly patting the ball past custodian Richie Richards.
Camptown continued to produce promising plays with Kester Alleyne working the flanks, penetrating on the right side but was guilty of consistently messing up some clear cut opportunities to the dismay of his teammates and supporters.
The first red card was issued to Camptown’s Reshawn Sandiford in the 33rd minute for serious foul play, the loss of Sandiford placed added pressure on his teammates to keep the champions at bay.
As the game matured, it developed into a physical battle of the war lords, Camptown holding their own but the Hammer seeking every opportunity to nail their rivals.
It was just a matter of time before Referee Mc Arthur went into his back pocket to issue marching orders again; he was consistently going into his left side top pocket issuing yellows.
Dwain Jacobs doubled the lead for ‘The Hammer’ in the 1st minute of added on time in the opening half as his side sat comfortably at the break leading, 2-0.
Camptown though, never stepped off the pedal and continued to fight admirably even dominating the champions.
They eventually were able to narrow the lead in the 53rd minute when midfielder Bevon Moseley tucked one past Ronson Williams.
Seven minutes later, Mc Arthur was brought into red card mode when Nigel Codrington was given marching orders for violent conduct following a pushing melee with Alpha’s Kelvin McKenzie.
The Camptown players protested vehemently to the referee that it was not Codrington alone who should be penalized. Following their protests, assistant referee Dion Inniss and Mc Arthur consulted following which a red was also issued to McKenzie.
With Camptown down to nine, they never looked that way in play as they continued to dominate Alpha, playing mostly in the champs half who were able to occasionally carry the attack to Camptown.
The game eventually ended 2-1, Alpha lifting their Third Cellink Plus Premier League Championship and Fourth title in a row, an enviable record in the football arena in Guyana.
Camptown, for the second consecutive year, ended as the runner-up team. The presentation will is expected to be done shortly.
The final point’s standings are as follows: Alpha United (37), Camptown (29), Guyana Defence Force (26), Fruta Conquerors (24), Pele (22), Western Tigers (15), GFC (6) and Flamingo (3).
