The owners of a now dead dog are up in arms against the police after one of their ranks shot and killed their dog leaving them with seven motherless pups.
Sharda BansGopaul of 14/15 Supply, Mahaica, told Kaieteur News that two police ranks, one in plainclothes, visited her home Thursday evening in search of her husband.
She was upstairs while her son was in the yard feeding “Page”, the dog that was nursing her seven pups. Mere seconds after her son completed his task and was heading up the back staircase she heard an explosion.
“I look outside and I see the policeman with a small black gun in he hand in the yard and I get frighten and start calling for my 12-year-old son,” she said.
He had already completed feeding the dog and was headed upstairs when the shot was fired.
The woman recounted that the two police ranks then mounted her staircase and met her at the door where she inquired of the reason for their presence in her yard.
“They say we looking for yah husband to pay he child support owed to the other woman.”
She said because the men did not know her husband’s name she was hesitant to let them into her home.
Her husband was not in the building at the time. The woman said that the men then pushed their way past her and began searching her house.
“They barge in and open the wardrobe, searched under the bed and behind the chairs” but they did not find the man and on their way out of the house the woman said the rank dressed in plain clothes shouted to her. “Look y’all got a dead dog downstairs to bury and when I look outside I see the dog dead.”
The shooting caused quite an uproar among dog lovers in the area more so because the dog had recently birthed a litter of seven pups.
The woman said that when the ranks left her home she immediately visited the Mahaica Police Station to lodge a report but was told that the police had already made one about the shooting of the dog.
“The Officer at the station tell me that they ain’t taking no report from me and that I should come back the next day (Friday),” the woman said.
Yesterday morning she received a call from the police inquiring about the shooting and according to her, she was advised against talking to the media.
“I call the media any way cause it could have been my son who get shot and they would have said it was an accident and because the seven puppies are without they mother and they only three weeks old.”
She said two police ranks subsequently visited her home. She stated too that while her efforts up to last evening to feed the pups with baby bottles were unsuccessful, she has not heard from the police on the subject of what will happen with the motherless pups.
But a senior police officer said that the owners of the dog were visited by ranks who expressed their disappointment at what transpired.
The officer said that they have since promised that they will be compensating the woman for killing her dog.
He said that the trigger happy rank will be disciplined to the full force of the law.
However, the woman who still has the rotting carcass of the dog in her backyard says that she does not know of any communication along that line from the police.
