Pulsating cricket is anticipated at the small DCC ground today from 11:00hrs when Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) and Everest clash today in the Demerara zone final of the National Neal & Massy first division 40-overs cricket competition.
Today’s winner will clash with Albion in Berbice in the national semi-finals on October 7. Unlike Berbice (which has 2 teams) only the champion team of Demerara will advance to the national ‘final four’ today and this should produce a ‘do or die’ effort from both teams.
Everest crossed a crucial hurdle last Sunday at their Camp Road base when they beat East Coast side Enterprise to maintain their 100% record while MSC crushed arch-rivals DCC the following day also at Everest to hand DCC their only defeat and take the top spot in their zone, to set up today’s battle.
While both team’s bowling could be spin-biased, the DCC track traditionally offers early help for the fast bowlers and former National Under-19 pacer Leon Scott would be hoping to impress after being left out of the Demerara limited overs team.
Another fast bowler, 17-year-old Guyana Under-19 pacer Seon Daniels would also want to press a claim for national senior team selection, especially since the Rest team he played for in the GCB 4-team competition was strangely omitted from the Inter-County one-day competition while Essequibo, unlikely to win a single game, was retained.
Former Guyana First-Class all-rounder and USA National Lennox Cush could share the new ball with Daniels for MSC and the experienced off-spinner, who along with Mahendra Nagamootoo could be recalled for Guyana’s 20/20 team, could play a key role today.
On the tiny Queenstown ground, former West Indies Test opener Ryan Ramdass and ex-West Indies youth batsman Rajendra Chandrika would relish the opportunity to get big scores under their belts and a keen contest is expected between bat and ball. Chris Patandin, Surendra Hirilall, Troy Gonsalves, Skipper Abhilash Dookie and Joseph Perry could all contribute with the bat and MSC will be wary of especially Gonsalves’ ability to score quickly and go for his shots.
Former West Indies Under-19 Captain Steven Jacobs is a specialist batsman who can bowl but his off-spin, has been improving rapidly in recent times and he along with left-arm spinner Damien Vantull, former National 20/20 player Orin Forde and Guyana player Deon Ferrier should take care of the MSC spin.
Ex-West Indies Under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan, Gonsalves, and left-arm spinner Javid Rasheed should do the bulk of the spinning for Everest.
The MSC batting is strong with Shemroy Barrington and Cush hoping to give their team a solid foundation at the top of the order. Ferrier, surprisingly left-out of the Demerara team despite a productive local season this year with the bat, will be hoping for a big score today to nudge the national selectors while Jacobs, Forde, Randy Lindore, ‘Keeper Sarfraz Esau and Kwame Crosse should also want to contribute with the bat today.
