Coach of the national Men’s Rugby team Laurie Adonis in an interview with Kaieteur Sport last Thursday said that the current squad preparing for the upcoming North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Championships in Mexico could very well be the best so far.
Adonis, who replaced former coach Sherlock Solomon, disclosed that based on the quality of the locally-based players in addition to those that are expected from overseas, the three-time champions should still be a formidable force and is optimistic that they can go all the way in retaining their title. “Presently we have a good combination of senior and junior players, all aiming to make the final cut and when you add those that are based overseas, I feel that we could be at our strongest and perhaps even stronger than the previous years,” Adonis opined.
He added that because of the magnitude of the tournament, the preparations have been intense and this has included training all week with game simulations scheduled for Saturdays.
“We are trying to do our best on the field getting prepared for the championships and with the incentive of the winning team automatically qualifying for the Commonwealth Games and the World Sevens Series in the USA next year, the intensity of our preparations have stepped up,” the new senior national coach revealed.
“There is also the possibility of rugby being accepted into the 2012 Olympic Games, so that is another reason for Guyana to do well at the upcoming event,” he pointed out
Adonis indicated that he has already spoken to the players urging them not to take the tournament lightly because they’ve won it for the past three years since most of the teams have been improving and Guyana has now become the hunted.
Asked where he felt preparations are at right now, he responded by saying that he estimates it to be in the vicinity of 70% and improving gradually. “We do not want a situation where we peak very early, so we’ve worked out a solid plan to steadily attain peak fitness shortly before departure.”
In terms of fitness, Adonis said that it is hovering around the same margin of 70% and this he added is evidenced by the fast recovery rate of the players after every session.
He was also high in praise of players such as current and former West Indies Claudius Butts, Albert LaRose and Theodore Henry, who according to him have brought a lot of experience and energy to the sessions.
However, Adonis stated that some players are still experiencing difficulty getting time off from work to attend practice sessions punctually, but is hoping that the situation is rectified very soon. More practice games are scheduled for today.
