The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) on Sunday last, as part of its Educational Programme for young cricketers held a successful HIV/AIDS march and rally.
The event was held with the support of the National AIDS Programme Secretariat and the Guyana Defense Force and attracted over 200 players from the Under-15 to senior level drawn from clubs across the Ancient County.
The march took place around the township of New Amsterdam with the cricketers outfitted in Tee Shirts provided by the Ministry of Health’s National AIDS Programme bearing the message “Get Tested”.
Supporting the march were by a large delegation from Comforting Hearts an NGO in Berbice, BCB Executives, Umpires and the Berbice Football Association (BFA) with musical accompaniment provided by the Guyana Defence Force.
Some of the slogans used during the march included “Protect yourself, Get Tested Today”, “Yes to Education, No to Drugs”, “Yes to Health, No to AIDS”.
At the Esplanade Recreational Park where the rally was held, the marchers were addressed by several speakers including BCB’s President Keith Foster, PRO Hilbert Foster, BFA General Secretary Joseph Simon, Zaheer Moakan of the Berbice Cricket Umpires Association, Shenella Edwards of Comforting Hearts and Guest Speaker Nazim Hussain of NAPS.
The BCB President expressed his delight at the huge turnout of young cricketers and urged them to join the battle against the dreaded disease (HIV/AIDS) by thinking and making the right decisions. He challenged them to be positive role models to others while informing them that the Board would be actively involved in social events of a similar nature more often in an effort to groom rounded individuals to represent the County.
Guest Speaker Nazim Hussain in a well received address told the gathering that AIDS is not the only silent killer but like any good bowler is always looking for ways to dismiss its next victim. The youths were advised to think like the world’s best batsman and protect themselves at all cost.
He congratulated the BCB for organising the event and pledged his organisation’s continued support to the Board in its anti HIV/AIDS Programme.
Chairman of the BCB’s Special Events Committee and PRO Hilbert Foster announced that the event would become an annual feature while noting that the Board would also become involved in activities to tackle social ills of society including Drugs and Alcohol Abuse, Peer Pressure, Teenage Sex and Pregnancy.
Gratitude was extended to NAPS, GDF, Guyana Police Force, Sterling Products Ltd, Bakewell, Spready’s Bakery & Snackette, Guyana Beverage Company, Impression Printery and DTV-8 for their assistance in making the event possible.
