The main opposition People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) says it is unacceptable that Kwame McCoy should continue to hold on to his position as a Commissioner on the Rights of the Child Commission despite the allegations hanging over his head.
McCoy, the Information Liaison Officer to the President, is suspected to be the adult soliciting sexual favours from a 15-year-old boy in a taped telephone conversation, which has been made public.
Speaking at his party’s weekly press conference, PNCR leader, Robert Corbin, said his party will continue to pursue the matter resolutely and repeated its call for an investigation.
While pointing out that the Rights of the Child Commission has not yet started its work, the Commission needs to be a body that can stand up to scrutiny and have the confidence of the people of Guyana, Corbin stated.
What happens to McCoy will depend a lot on civil society and the people of Guyana, he said, pointing out that his party will explore all possibilities.
McCoy has denied that he is the adult in the tape recording, although the minor involved has admitted to his mother, who spoke with Kaieteur News, that he did have the conversation with McCoy at the time of the recording.
President Bharrat Jagdeo, four days ago, said he will make a determination on McCoy’s fate once he was fully briefed on the matter.
According to the PNCR, there must be serious concern over these developments given the record of McCoy’s and the vigorous objections made by the PNCR in Parliament, when his name surfaced as the representative of the Human Services Ministry on the Rights of the Child Commission.
The PNCR has expressed pessimism that any action will be taken against McCoy, without the insistence of the people of Guyana.
“The recent involvement of the Minister of Local Government, Kellawan Lall, in a shooting incident on the East Coast and the alleged involvement of the Minister of Health in facilitating, on behalf of President Jagdeo, the purchase of the ”spy” computer by Roger Khan are two examples where the Government showed contempt for people of Guyana,” the PNCR said in an earlier statement.
McCoy has taken leave and has left Georgetown and is reportedly headed to Venezuela.
