Safraz X1 and Countryside X1 progressed to the semi-final stage of the Mike’s Pharmacy 15 overs, Countrywide Round Hand Softball cricket tournament with resounding victories over Rockets XI and Pacesetters XI, respectively, when play in that tournament continued with matches played over the past weekend.
Countryside XI batted first and scored 141-9 in 15 overs. Leon Deebra (34) and Sakichand Jagdeo (25) were the principal batsmen for the winners. Narine Hardat (3-20 from 3 overs) and Arnold Rambarran (2-15 from 3 overs) then contrived to dismiss Rockets XI to 96 all out in 13 overs.
Safraz XI (Georgetown) then gained a walkover from pacesetters XI of Linden. The winners then returned to defeat Takers XI of East Bank by 124 runs:
In the Regular/Open category for the Mike’s Pharmacy Trophy at the NIS Ground Carifesta Avenue, Trophy Stall XI defeated Hot Steppers XI by 8 wickets. Hot Steppers won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 60 all out in 9.5 overs. Alex Singh (14) was the best batsman while Jagdesh Deosarran (4-7 from 3 overs) and Rajin Mohamed (3-16 from 3 overs) being the best bowlers.
Street Boys XI of Georgetown then gained a walkover from South Star XI of Linden shortly before Safraz XI (Georgetown) defeated Trophy Stall XI of East Coast by 5 wickets in a close match after Trophy Stall XI had compiled 163. The winners then scored 164-5 in a nail biting last ball victory. Shaheed Gittens (66) and Richard Latiff (53) were the principal scorers while Gary Singh, took 3-26 from 3 overs to cart off the bowling honours.
In other matches, Rangers XI (West Coast) gained a walkover from Belle Plain XI of Wakenaam.
They will now take on Superstreet XI of West Coast this weekend in their second knockout match. Wolf’s Warriors XI (West Coast) defeated All Stars XI of Wakenaam and will is slated to take on Shattaville XI of West Coast.
Diamond Superstars next defeated Street boys XI by 8 wickets after the latter team batted first and scored 158 all out in 14.5 overs. In reply, Diamond Superstars made 160-2 in 13 overs. Lindon Mc Koy (65) and Steve Sankar (64) were the principal scorers.
Country Side XI of East Coast also defeated Diamond Superstars by 9 wickets in their encounter played in the afternoon. In matches played at the Whim Ground in Berbice, Water World XI defeated Rocketeers XI by 6 wickets while Whim United XI defeated Rocketeers XI by 22 runs.
Whim United XI batted first and made 143-3 in 15 overs. In reply, Rocketeers XI were limited to 121-7 in their 15 overs. The winning team then returned later in the day to defeat Water World XI by 4 wickets.
Meanwhile, the two quarter-finalists from Berbice will be determined this weekend after the remaining rounds is completed. The Essequibo quarter-finalists are current countrywide champions, Die Hard XI, and United Brothers XI, who have both played unbeaten so far.

This tournament was launched last week and teams are contesting for cash and other incentives. The first match is scheduled to begin on 11 October 2009.
