Oct 02, 2009 Letters
Dear Editor,
I respond to Mr. Boyo Ramsaroop’s letter “The AFC is a multiracial movement” (Kaieteur News, 27/9/2009).
I understand Mr. Ramsaroop is not defending the claim that the AFC is the only multiracial party. From Mr. Ramsaroop’s stories he is confirming what is known, i.e. the other political parties have multiracial support. This is sufficient coming from a person of Mr. Ramsaroop’s prominence. Now the AFC and Freddie Kissoon need to stop the false claim of being the only multiracial party.
Like Ramsaroop’s family who supported both the PNCR and PPP this last weekend his letters were discussed with another known Indian family who are both PPP and PNC. The entire family was PPP but with the spilt one brother stayed with the PPP, the others and a sister went with Mr. Burnham.
The PPP supporter said he stayed with Dr. Jagan because he loved him. His brothers and sister said they went with Mr. Burnham because they admired his intelligence and vision for Guyana. The PPP member said around late 1995 or early 1996 he became disgusted and quit politics after having a talk with Dr. Jagan about the corruption of his ministers and Dr. Jagan admitted he was also hearing the rumours and asked what he should do. He told Dr. Jagan to fire them because they were embarrassing him and the party.
Respecting the privacy of the family who gave permission to share our conversation but not their names because of not wanting to be in the crossfire of what they call “the small politics” they told me the truth about the PPP and Dr. Jagan lies somewhere between Mr. Ramsaroop’s stories and what Mr. Moses Nagamootoo said.
They said Joey Jagan was telling the truth about his father and Mr. Burnham friendship and sitting on the seawalls. They said Dr. Jagan supported Mr. Burnham on many things and believed Dr. Jagan was a nice man who was smothered by Mrs. Jagan’s power. They think things could have been different if Mrs. Jagan was a little flexible and forgiving.
This family is disappointed with what they call the “new politics” and says it is worse now.
They do not share Mr. Ramsaroop’s optimism the AFC can return Guyana to racial harmony because the politicians are selfish. They say these chaps (Mr. Ramjattan and Mr. Trotman) looking out for themselves then reminisced on the days of lawyer politics when being legally correct was more honourable than being politically correct. They think Kaieteur’s editorial on the Opposition and politics say it all.
They all admitted there were always racial problems and racial togetherness but the racial problems are more now than the racial togetherness and President Jagdeo must be blamed for it. All said the country is worse now than it was ever under Dr. Jagan and Mr. Burnham and both men are crying shame at President Jagdeo for destroying Guyana.
The family said they are not aware Mr. Burnham turned away Jagan’s scholars and if he did it must have been a reason since Mr. Burnham was known for trying to win over PPP supporters and was not a man to let a good brain go by. The family remembered Mr. Burnham and Dr. Jagan had an agreement to employ PPP scholars and said even Mr. Jagdeo, a PPP scholar, got a job at State Planning Secretariat under the PNC.
I wish Mr. Ramsaroop good health and ask he continues writing.
