Any money that comes from developed countries to assist in the fight against the effects of climate change will be properly accounted for.
As a matter of fact, President Bharat Jagdeo said last night, Parliament will have oversight alongside with overseas inspectors. And all proper procedures will be followed.
The comments were made last night during a glitzy opening of GuyExpo 2009.
Addressing a packed audience as the smell of food wafted in and sounds of hammering still echoing, Jagdeo used the occasion to underscore the importance of Low Carbon Development Strategy noting that for Guyana to benefit, the time to act is now.
Lauding the organizers and exhibitors for what he said may be the best looking exposition yet, the President said that there are opportunities in these tough times and pointed to the steady expansions and the messages from the private sector that development was taking place.
He made reference to the recently commissioned Takutu bridge and trade possibilities with Brazil, and noted that meetings with the private sector and the Guyana Public Service Union have indicated a strong resolution for all to work together.
The Head of State expressed strong optimism, promising Government’s support for those who seek opportunities.
He acknowledged that with global capital shrunk and low prices, the good news is that Guyana was not so hard hit because of prudent management by government. Along with this is the fact that inflation and Government spending are both under control.
The gathering included Prime Minister Sam Hinds, Ministers, members of Diplomatic Corps, exhibitors and other officials. Chairman of the Private Sector Commission, Gerry Gouveia, said that GuyExpo has evolved over the past years and the private sector in Guyana is ready to welcome with open arms all investors.
Hyping Kaieteur Falls as a must-see, the businessman urged that it is everybody’s boat and no longer a case of “them or us or us or them”.
“We owe it to our children,” he said.
With the Berbice Bridge and Takutu Bridge coming on stream, there must be a sense of urgency in ensuring proper environmental practices are followed. He urged Government to seriously look into the areas of renewable energy especially in the hydro power sector.
Minister of Tourism and Trade, Manniram Prashad, noted that the event is the main one in the calendar of his ministry which affords several businesses an opportunity to expand.
It has evolved to become the premier trade show in the Caribbean.
The official lauded the numerous companies that took part and urged them use the forum to generate new ideas on how to expand and diversify their businesses.
