Dear Editor,
The Guyana Public Service Union deserves a new breed of leadership. The leaders sitting at the 18th Biennial Delegates’ Conference conforms how badly the union needs new blood, new thinking, new direction and new commitment.
No one denies the union has to talk with an oppressive employer, but Mr. Patrick Yarde has done the unpardonable sitting with looking pretty and comfortable with an employer who is snuffing the life out of public servants he was elected to represent.
Adding insult to injury, delegates and invites were feted at the State house. Mr. Yarde needs to name at least three things President Jagdeo has within the last six years to increase the salary and working conditions for workers was deserving celebration at State House. Even President Jagdeo knew otherwise and absent himself from the function. It is suspect though that he could not resist the temptation to watch the workers he oppresses celebrating on his lawns.
Dr. Roger Luncheon is speaking about constructive engagement between the union and government.
The constructive engagement the GPSU gets from the government is imposed salaries every year, lie detector for public servants, customs officers sent home, striking workers threatened, non-confirmation of acting appointments, agency shop withdrawal, contract workers replacing traditional workers and paid bigger gratuity and pensions, the supreme court Marshalls still not re-employed, etc, etc.
Come December salaries will be imposed and Mr. Yarde will cry blue but the government will not budge. Mr. Yarde is not too bothered about these occurrences since he knows his benefits and salary are comparable to the Head of the Presidential Secretariat. When his term is up he will extend the age limit and continue to majestically preside over suffering workers, a dying union and rotten buildings.
Watching Mr. Yarde on the stage with Dr. Luncheon, Labour Minister Nadir and Ms. Chandrawattie public servants saw the characters of George Orwell’s book Animal Farm. Indeed, all are equal but some are more equal than some.
