The exciting races of yesteryear witnessed at the annual Inter-House school sports are apparently now merely events, lost in the annuls of history. Undoubtedly, there has been a lax attitude among administrators towards the physical development of school children, to the extent that the standard at these meets has been considerably depleted.
Last Wednesday morning Kaieteur Sports took its cameras to the St Margaret’s Inter House Sports at the Old Guyana National Service Ground, Carifesta Avenue and witnessed several exciting races among the children in different categories. Indeed, the rivalry was competitive but an especially excellent race occurred early in the day when the U-12 boys competed in the 1000 meters event.
The athletes were required to cover four laps to complete the race. In an amazing demonstration of determination and courage, Nevan Adonis of Grade Six Dove sprinted away with the first prize. Isaiah Giddings finished second followed by Nixon Cheeks who finished third. Matthew Greaves finished fourth.
Indeed Kaieteur Sport believes that with proper attention and care these youngsters may go on to be the Usain Bolts of tomorrow once they receive the right attention.
It is for that reason we believe their performances are worthy of mention.
Meanwhile, University of Guyana Sociology lecturer, Andrew Hicks delivered a stirring address to the athletes, moments before declaring the event open. He labeled the occasion as very special in view of the fact that such activities played a critical role in molding and sustaining their character.
The sociologist urged the students to take their experiences garnered from participation back to their classrooms and their communities.
He further urged them to let the lessons learnt to impact positively in their general lives. “Let this experience strengthen your character, broaden your relationships and bring creative talents to a more useful and productive life,” he implored them.
Meanwhile, yellow house amassed 498 points to win the championships from Red House with 476 points. Blue House finished third with 369 points while Green House ended up in the cellar with 334 points.
