Alphabet, Bad News and Lady of my Dreams score impressive wins
On a day blessed with brilliant sunshine a fair size crowd was on hand to witness a grand day of horse racing when the Rising Sun Turf Club in collaboration with the True Friends Committee held a one day eight race meet on Sunday September 27 at the club’s race track at the Arima Park Rising Sun Turf Club on the West Coast of Berbice.
However, the days proceedings was marred by some controversy in the main C class event which was sponsored by Banks DIH over 1600m with a tantalizing $300,000 available for the winner.
No winner was declared, as Mr. Colin Elcock whose horse Miss Republic ridden by Paul Delph was edged out on the line by Irish Gel mounted by Kumar Singh of the Singh’s stable protested that his animal was badly bounced three times by Irish Gel as it was about to pass.
Miss Republic eventually was able to pass its opponent, but was edge out on the line in a ding dong battle between the two animals.
Elcock is claiming that the infringement caused by Irish Gel on Miss Republic, caused his animal to lose its stride, thus the race.
The organisers were expected to meet and review the circumstance and make a decision on the way forward.
The early running in the event was done by Sweet Caramel and Sequins and the two animals held on to end in third and fourth.
Mr. Marcel Crawford’s Night Crescendo created one of the major upsets of the year when it beat all and sundry in winning the co feature three year old race for horses born and bread in Guyana and the West Indies over 1400m. The animal ridden by Kevin Paul came through with a blaze of speed to win by about four lengths and take the $250,000 first prize and trophy sponsored by BK International and Citizen’s Bank.
By chalking up its first win Night Crescendo left in its wake pre race favourites Stop on the Line, Sweet Romance and Prixie Fire as they occupied the other top positions.
Zionata of the Jumbo Jet Stable continues to make a name for itself in the 2 yr old event, chalking up its third victory in the 1300m race also for horses born and bred in Guyana and the West Indies.
In the most convincing victory of the day, the horse, piloted by Prem Chandra, led from start to finish and literally destroyed its opponents by some 10 lengths to win the $200,000 first prize and trophy compliments of Demerara Distilleries Limited and Digicel. Rounding out the money were Mona Lisa, Mary Gold and Little Spike.
Alphabet of the Elcock stables with Jockey Paul Delph in the stirrups had things its way in winning the F class 1100m sprint from Laura Lee in Flight, The Gap and Bad News to claim the 160,000 top prize and trophy compliments of Hand In Hand and Ainlim.
Lady of my Dreams of the Elcock stables with Paul Delph one again on mount, then made it two wins for horses from that entity with a spanking run down the home stretch in a well timed come from behind win in the G class match up.
Rounding out the top four were baby Boy, World Class and Custom Warrior. The $100,000 first prize and trophy was donated by Namilco and Muneshwar’s Limited. The distance was 1400m.
Red Bull of the Shamsundar stable had plenty of energy and was hard on his opponents in winning the J, K and lower 1100M event. The prize was $80.000 for the Ansa Mc Al Trading and Horse Shoe trophy. Custom Warrior, Easy Go and Madonna finished second to fourth.
Bad News of the Leary Robinson stable won the H and lower event from gate to pole to carry away the winner’s purse of $90,000. Baby Boy and Vanessa were the other top finishers.
Rum Till I Die of the Fraser Stable was well charged up and made sure that it had the right dosage for President Junior and Nobody Knows and it won the first prize in the L class 1100m event which was worth $75,000.
The Elcock stables took the lion’s share of the individual prizes on offer as they carted off the champion stable accolade while Colin Elcock was the adjudged the champion trainer and Paul Delph of the same stable took home the champion jockey title compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the trophy stall Bourda market.
Over $3M in cash along with trophies were on offer, with some 55 horses entering the starting gates. Popular sound system Rhythm Stars International was in attendance and added some spice to the Day’s proceedings.
