Four new records broken & three established
Dorado Speed Swim Club (DSSC) has established a commanding lead at the end of the first day of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association 2009 three-day Inter-Club Distance Meet, being held at the Castelani Pool, Homestretch Avenue.
At the end of the first day, Dorado are way out front on 77 points, well ahead of their nearest rival Dolphin Speed Swim Club on 29 and Orca Speed Swim Clun bringing up the rear with 16. Of the 14 events contested on the opening day, Dorado won half.
A number of athletes were in record breaking mood; Britany van Lange (girl’s 11-12 age group) set the tone for the day in the first event when she smashed Noelle Smith’s 1500 freestyle mark of 23:54.07 achieved in 2006 by posting a new record of 21:08.40. Van Lange was not content to settle for just one record as she continued from where she left off at the 2009 Goodwill Championships held in Barbados.
She placed her name in the record books again in event number 9 when she overhauled Soroya Simmons’ old 200m butterfly record of 3:36.46 accomplished in 2008. The new time is now 3:24.13. Travis Henry emulated van Lange in the next event with a vintage performance in the same age group for boys by setting a new mark of 21:43.64 to tumble Justin Jairam’s 9 year old mark of 26:38.51.
Henk Lowe joined the record breaking gang in the 6th race of the day when he set a new (boys 15-17) record over a similar distance as van Lange and Henry. Lowe’s new mark of 19:10.01 is the best time GASA has on record for this event for any age-group. The old mark of 19:55.22 was set by Jamaal Sobers in 2006.
Three new records were also established by Athena Gaskin in the girls 13-14 1500m free (21:40.82); event 12 – boys 13-14 (200 fly) Sheik Amir achieving a time of 3:16.73 and event 13 – girls 15-17 (200 fly) Noelle Smith setting the standard with 2:51.89. Competition will continue on Saturday at the same venue from 08:00hrs, warm up commences one hour earlier. (Franklin Wilson) Following is the full results from day one.
