Water flow not expected anytime soon in Dazzell Scheme
The community of Bare Root, East Coast Demerara, can expect water by the end of the week, so said Housing and Water Minister Irfaan Ali. The Minister made the promise at a land title distribution exercise in the village of Paradise, East Coast Demerara, Sunday.
This is the third promise the community has received in just over two weeks. Residents of the community reported an absence of potable water for close to 20 years.
Shortly after the reports on the residents’ plight, Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), in a statement, promised the community water by the end of that week. When that obligation was not met another promise was made. That too did not materialise.
On Monday, Minister Ali said that there have been some interconnection problems and that these were hindering the works.
However, these have been sorted out and water should flow through the taps by the end of this week. Ali said government is spending close to $45M in that community, to install a new network service connection upgrade.
He is calling on residents to make the necessary payments to the GWI office in that area to ensure that they receive potable water when it becomes available.
However the neighbouring community of Dazzell Scheme should not expect water anytime soon. According to the Minister, the situation in that area will have to be assessed after which a decision will be made. He said that because the community is managed by a co-operative the government cannot move to assist the community like it will with others. Aside from that, the Minister noted that stand pipes were placed along the main road in the area for residents to receive potable water but these were vandalised.
Additionally some residents made connections from these stand pipes to their homes without being instructed to do so. This was at the expense of the entire community. Ali said the community was upbraided for this, but it still persisted. The Minister said that Government cannot do and undo what was already done; this he says is placing a burden on the ministry’s already limited resources.
The community’s problem is compounded by the many unregularised persons residing there. According to him this situation has to be remedied before any water network is installed there. The community of Dazzell Scheme has been experiencing similar water problems like its neighbouring village Bare Root for more than ten years.
