Dear Editor,
I finally made my way across the Berbice after a schedule closure from 2:20 to 4 pm yesterday (29-09-09). It was a rather unfortunate experience for me especially since I had the option of using the Ferry from New Amsterdam. Be that as it may, I am alive and well, and that suffice.
Something unpleasant happened that made me come to the conclusion that the management and Administration of the Berbice Bridge care little for the commuters. A woman, who was a foreigner, enquired of the security officers present about toilet facilities. There was none. Would you imagine sir, that after more than nine months of operation, with almost daily scheduled closure, there are no sanitary facilities at the West end of the Bridge? I guess it will not be that inconvenient for most of us, Guyanese men, who can hang ourselves out. But what of the women? Thankfully in the case of the women, and most likely many others, this was not an emergency situation.
Time is long over due for toilet facilities on the Western end of the much acclaimed and vaunted, Berbice River Bridge. It is the people that enable the making of “profits”.
