Eight victims who suffered from a recent spate of fires were present at the Guyana Relief Council yesterday to receive donations of mattresses, clothing and groceries while one received a cheque to buy building materials for renovation.
Victorine Ifill, with a family of three of 296 Field ‘C’ Sophia who received the cheque; Sybil Annibourne, with a family of five of 255 Grove Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara; Ovid Benn,. with a family of one of 13 Half Mile, Wismar; Zaimoon Sookram of 485 Temple Street, Crane, West Coast Demerara; Denise Mollyneaux, with a family of two of Dennis Street Squatting Area, Sophia; Mahadai Rambajan, with a family of three, of 39 Craig Mill Street Cove and John, East Coast Demerara; Marlette Bobb, with a family of four of 3 Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara; and Joylyn Barker with a family of three of 38 Public Road, East Bank Demerara were the beneficiaries.
These fires occurred this year.
The Guyana Relief Council stated that it is ever aware of the necessity to alleviate some of the trauma suffered by persons, whose lives are disrupted by disasters. Temporary shelters are available to accommodate any disaster victim who wishes to be housed until their circumstances are less stressful.
According to Lynette Carter, the administrative officer of the Relief Council, “We receive small Government subventions, and donations from businesses and donor foundations, which we give to flood, fire and victims of any kind of disaster whether it is natural or manmade. “However, we are making an urgent appeal to individuals and members of the corporate community to donate towards this humanitarian work.”
