The late Andrew Lyght was arguable the best opening batmen Guyana produced who did not play Test cricket and his son Andrew Lyght Junior seems to be following in his footsteps as a pugnacious right-handed opener.
While Lyght senior, who died at age 44 in 2001, played the last of his 38 First-Class matches in 1988 and scored 6 centuries and 8 fifties at that level, his son, who has been living and playing cricket in Trinidad for the last few seasons, is now set to make his debut for Demerara tomorrow in Essequibo in the opening match of the El Dorado 50-overs Inter-county competition.
Lyght who plays for DCC in local cricket has been drafted into the one-day squad along with all-rounders Sauid Drepaul and Kelon Carmichael.
The injured Damien Vantull and pacer Leon Scott are the two players to lose their place in the squad from the 13-man 4-day line-up which beat Essequibo last week Friday.
Test batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan has been retained as Skipper while Zaheer Mohamed is the Vice-Captain.
Although former First-Class off-spinner Gavin Nedd was the Coach for the 4-Day game and Mustapha Kadir was the Manager, the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) has not yet named a Coach and Manager for the One-Day competition.
The Demerara team is expected to leave today for Essequibo where tomorrow’s match is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs at the Anna Regina ground.
The Demerara squad:-Ramnaresh Sarwan (Captain), Zaheer Mohamed (Vice Captain), Rajendra Chandrika, Shemroy Barrington, Andrew Light jnr, Krishna Deosarran, Gajanand Singh, Leon Johnson, Stephen Jacobs, Troy Gonsalves, Joseph Perry, Christopher Barnwell, Sauid Drepaul, Kellon Carmichael.
