Differently able table tennis player Gibran Hussein left Guyana last Saturday to participate in the Para Pan American Championships which is being held in Venezuela.
Hussein, who has a severed left hand is a very capable tennis player and has been involved in the sport for sometime.
Rated among the top players in the county of Berbice, Hussein speaking with Kaieteur Sport shortly before departure said that he is fully aware of the enormous task ahead of him, but feels that he is adequately prepared and confident of doing well, during the tournament which started on Sunday and is expected to end on October 4.
According to Hussein, this is the first time that a Guyanese will be competing at such an event and he is very humbled and thankful to all those who’ve made it possible for him to attend the tournament.
“I did a lot of training in preparation for this tournament, I worked very hard and I’m feeling very confident,” Hussein expressed.
He added that his preparations included playing against most of the top players locally and this has allowed him to adapt to the various styles that he may encounter during the championships.
The local racquet wielder disclosed that he is very appreciative of the efforts of the Guyana Table Tennis Association, while he expressed gratitude to his sponsors A. Alli & Sons of Corriverton, Mayor of Corriverton Roy Baijnauth, Republic Bank, Mr. Linden Murray and everyone who in some way contributed to the trip.
Hussein will be competing in the Open Singles category since Guyana failed to send a team.
