-Camptown, Seawall United draw 1-1
Fresh off of retaining their Premiership title, Alpha United showed visiting Linden team Top XX why they are the undisputed kings of local football with an impressive 4-1 win last Sunday as the Guyana Football Federation National League continued, at the GCC ground.
Elso Diaz (52, 76) hammered in a double, while there was one apiece for Quincy Madramootoo (55) and skipper Howard Lowe (86).
Jamie Wilson had given Top XX the lead in the 27th minute of play.
In results of the other two matches played at the same venue, GDF who’ve looked lacklustre so far in the competition, suffering losses in both of their previous games, rebounded to inflict a crushing 4-1 triumph over Milerock, while in the Ladies segment, Lethem continued their fine run with another victory this time against Linden, defeating them 2-0.
In the feature contest, Alpha United who had looked a bit jaded in the earlier rounds appeared livelier at the start of the match with right winger Andrew Murray Jr. Testing the Top XX goalkeeper with a fierce shot off a pass from the left side.
Madramootoo then dribbled two players, before unleashing a powerful drive that slammed into the crossbar and rebounded into play.
As if to emphasise their dominance, Lowe then saw his header pushed over the bar for a corner, all those chances coming within minutes of each other, but none finding the back of the goal.
Top XX then won a corner and during a goalmouth scrimmage, Wilson easily patted the ball into an open goal which gave them the ascendancy.
Not daunted by being behind, Alpha attacked with fervour, especially Madramootoo and Murray Jr, who were creating havoc for the visitors defence, but Top XX managed to maintain their 1-0 advantage at the break.
Alpha made a change in the final period with Diaz being inserted into the game and his impact was felt almost immediately, netting the equaliser. Three minutes after his goal, the persistent and bubbly Madramootoo eventually pierced the defence which gave them the lead.
Diaz came back to net his second, while Lowe, who has been a tower of strength at the back, also found time to beat the Top XX custodian in what could be described as an efficient and impressive display by Alpha.
The Army were also in top form as they completely outplayed Milerock. Seon Brewley, whose form had dipped, returned with a top class display to net a double in the 54th, 61st minutes, while Keon Joseph (26th) and Shawn Arthur (49th) added their names to the list of scorers.
In the Ladies affair, Lethem were led to victory by goals from Sonia Griffith (20th) and Janet Wenceslaus (59th). They now have two wins from as many matches.
Over at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground, Camptown and Seawall United played to a 1-1 stalemate.
Bevon Moseley in the 31st minute netted for the Camptown, while Gavin Brown in the 16th minute had given Seawall the lead.
