‘Final under lights will be vigorously promoted’- Ramsay Ali
By Sean Devers
When Demerara battled Berbice in the inaugural El’Dorado senior Inter-County One-Day final at Albion in 2001 it marked the commencement of a fruitful collaboration between Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) and the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) for the staging of Guyana’s premier limited overs Inter-county competition.
The launching of the 9th annual event was held yesterday at the GCB Secretariat and Ramsay Ali, Marketing Manager of the GCB, informed that the 3 preliminary round games and especially the Final at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence on Saturday October 10 under floodlights will be vigorously promoted.
“We have a week between the final preliminary match and the final and we (DDL & GCB) will ensure that it is not a quiet affair. We will really promote the final and urge the fans to come out and support the tournament,” Ali said.
Chairman of the National Selectors Claude Raphael, who told Kaieteur Sport after the launching that he was in favour of having the Rest team participate in this tournament since they were no trials, said that this competition was an important one since it was being used to select the Guyana team for next month’s Regional limited overs series which is fixed for Guyana.
Raphael said that provisions have been made for players who do not participate in the El Dorado competition for wholly acceptable reasons to still be eligible for national selection, stating that he expected competitive cricket since most of the senior players in Guyana should be on show from tomorrow’s opening game in Anna Regina to the grand finale at the Stadium.
Travis Dowlin and Royston Crandon will be excused since they are in South Africa with the West Indies side for the Champions Trophy while it is understood that Shivnarine Chanderpaul could also be given permission to miss the El Dorado tournament although the completion of his county contract with English side Durham would make him available to play in the Inter-County competition.
Vice-President of the GCB Bissoon Singh thanked DDL for their continued support of the competition and emphasized the importance of this tournament to Guyana’s preparation for Regional One-Day tournaments.
Demerara and Essequibo will face-off tomorrow in Region 2 in the opening match before
Essequibo and defending champions Berbice will clash on Saturday October 3 at Blairmont in the 2nd match.
Berbice will be keen to prove that their win against Demerara at the Stadium in last year’s final was no fluke when they battle the Ramnaresh Sarwan led Demerara side at the Wales Community Centre ground in West Bank Demerara on Sunday October 4.
Admission to all of the preliminary round matches is $200 while children under 12 will be admitted free.
The $2 Million sponsorship cheque and trophies were formally presented to the GCB at yesterday’s launching. Former National Hockey player Maria Munroe, in her capacity as DDL’s Marketing Reprehensive, made the presentation to Singh and said that DDL and El’Dorado is pleased to partner with the GCB to host this competition and encouraged all the 3 teams involved to play competitive cricket.
