TAIN, CORENTYNE – The naked body of 49-year old Chintra Punwassy also known as ‘Chandra’ of Fourth Street, Tain Settlement on the Corentyne, was found in her bed early yesterday (Sunday) morning.
The details are somewhat sketchy but according to police reports, the discovery was made by a sister, Kawalah Dabidyal, of Tain Settlement about 08:30 hours yesterday.
Investigators are a bit baffled since blood stains were on the sheet, pillow, mattress and night clothes of the victim but her wound was not big enough for that amount of blood.
The only sign of injury on the body was a little bruise on her chin. Her tongue was protruding. A bloody knife was recovered from under the bed. There was also some blood on the kitchen door of the lower flat.
Initially, relatives were not too certain how the intruders entered the home but while talking to the Kaieteur News they discovered that a piece between the rungs of the back stairway by the kitchen was loose.
Apparently the killer knocked it out and crawled through. This stairway passes through the kitchen on the lower flat and leads to the three bedrooms and living room upstairs. Chintra Punwassy who lived alone occupied the front room.
Relatives suspect that she was murdered and sexually abused.
Her older sister, Debbie Dabidyal, of Block Four, New Scheme, Tain, said she got a call from her sister’s neighbour about 10:30 hours after they failed to see Punwassy surface for the day.
Dabidyal and her husband arrived at her sister’s home half an hour later. When they got there, the gate was locked.
They eventually entered the yard after the lock on the gate was broken.
“When we come in we look round and we ain’t see nothing. When me go upstairs, me start holler. Me see me sister lie down in a bed cover with blood. Them strip she naked!”
Debbie Dabidyal said she could not say if robbery was the motive but at a glance, nothing appeared to be missing.
“The police say them (killers) choke she so she nah get to holler. They say they kill she about 4:30 am. When I come the body didn’t stiff or anything.”
The woman said she last saw her sister on Wednesday and all was well.
An older sister, Moni Totaram said Chintra was an easy going person but had frequent altercations with a neighbour who resided across the street.
“The same person say he gwine kill she but he move out. She was not the fighting kind, she was quiet and she and everybody okay.”
Chandra Punwassy was the mother of 28-year old Veeren Veerasammy who lives at Ankerville.
