OVERWINNING, NEW AMSTERDAM – The New Amsterdam Primary/Secondary School (NAPSS) Football Foundation recently handed over a fully loaded computer system to the Hibiscus Nursery School at Overwinning on the outskirts of New Amsterdam. According to an associate of the foundation, Avia Lindie, the handing over of the Hewlett Packard Compact system along with its 17-inch monitor and other gadgets was in fulfillment of a promise made two years ago when the Secretary/Treasurer of the United States chapter, Marcia Ross, visited Guyana. This gift is to be followed by the handing over of some educational compact discs at a later date. The Foundation had taken the decision to assist in raising the level of awareness of football among students of primary and secondary schools in Berbice and to improve their participation in the development of the sport.
Head Teacher of the Hibiscus Nursery, Donita Davidson-Sinclair, pointed out that this is a way of boosting the curriculum advancement. In addition, it would make learning fun for the 39 students. She expressed gratitude on behalf of three members of staff and promised to make the most of the system.
The New Amsterdam Primary/Secondary School Football Foundation is made up of both local and overseas-based Berbicians. It was established in September 2007 in the United States of America.
The group comprises members of the 1970 New Amsterdam/Canje Football Squad and other associates. This team was said to be triumphant at the Guyana Primary School Football Tournament 38 years ago.
At that time, the Manager was Errol Alphonso and the Coach was Gladstone Prass. The team consisted of Granton Inniss, Roger Alphonso, Neil Humphrey, Sam Jones, Colin Jones, Walford Edwards, Walton Edwards, Michael Taylor, Richard Belgrave, Richard Staglan, Hubern Evans, Winston Henry and Floyd Grimond.
The Captain of the squad was Martin Inniss, while Dennis Ellis and Neil Jones were goalkeepers.
Some of these players – Martin Inniss, Granton Inniss, Roger Alphonso and Neil Humphrey later represented Guyana at the senior football level while Hubern Evans made a name for himself in cricket.
The President of NAPSS is Gladstone Prass, while Roger Alphonso and Granton Inniss hold the fort as Vice Presidents. Petra Forde of New Amsterdam is the Secretary/Treasurer for the Guyana arm.
NAPSS Football Foundation is the brainchild of Roger Alphonso who saw the need to give something back to his homeland.
