Defending champions Alpha United have retained the GFA / Cellink Plus title following a 2-1 victory over Flamingo, while a goalless stalemate between Sunburst Camptown and GDF, earned both teams 1 point apiece in the feature match in action from the Premier League, which continued with a doubleheader on Friday last at the Tucville ground.
Quincy Madramootoo after 13 minutes put Alpha ahead 1-0 which lasted only for 17 minutes when Dellon Allen capitalised on some loose defending by the eventual winners to account for the equalizer. With no additional goals materializing, the first half ended 1-1 of the opening encounter.
Upon the resumption both teams battled intensely for the go ahead goal, with Flamingo’s back four defending resolutely to deny Alpha scoring opportunities that came their way. However, in the 64th minute Dwayne Jacobs was able to restore Alpha’s lead that eventually was the winning goal.
Meanwhile, both GDF and Camptown were guilty of squandering goal scoring opportunities, in both segments of the match. Moreover, the latter, who were more dominant in the second half and were putting together more constructive passes, in addition to maintaining possession for longer periods, were let down by poor finishing.
Alpha with their 11 wins, 1 draw and a loss in 13 matches and with 1 match left to play, have progressed to an unsurpassable 34 points that has enabled them to clinch their fourth consecutive Premier League title.
Camptown, who continues to occupy the second spot, have 29 points to their credit; followed by the third place GDF with 26. Conquerors, Pele, B.K Int. Western Tigers, GFC and Flamingo have 23, 16, 12, 5 and 3 points respectively, in the remaining positions.
The latter two will be relegated to the first division next season. Play in the competition continues on Wednesday, Sept 30 with another doubleheader at the same venue.
