Mention the name ‘Kaneville’, and most people conjure up images of poverty and violent crime.
But thanks to the academic performances of several students from the East Bank Demerara community, Kaneville can now be seen in a positive light.
Despite the many challenges, Kaneville students performed creditably at the recent Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations and National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA).
Among those successful at the CSEC are Kisina Mc Lean (seven subjects with two grade ones, two grades twos, and three grade threes); Rochelle Loncke (six subjects with two grade twos and four grade threes); and Elwyn Douglas, two grade twos.
The successful Grade Six Assessment pupils are Lotaya Garraway (538) O’Neil Powers (503); Rabicia Niles (491); Julian Pitt (478); Kassie Barry (472) Treasius Dover (459) Naomi Ignado (447); Stacy Henry (439) Sabrean Gordon (438) Kimberly Rose (414); and Winston Williams (404).
The children were honoured by their community at a recent church service.
