Guyanese duo on podium in Newsday 5k race
Guyanese distance athletes Kelvin Johnson and Lionel D’Andrade came second and third respectively yesterday in the Newsday Newspapers 5km Road Race Run in Trinidad and Tobago behind regional star, Pamenos Ballantyne.
The St Vincent and the Grenadines distance athlete won the race in 14:56 seconds while a surging Johnson finished second in 15:01 with D’Andrade third in 15:03. D’Andrade was defending the title he won last year in the race.
“I won last year and (I) really wanted to defend my title but I had a lot of competition this that I didn’t have last year. I was confident that I would have done so but then it was stiff out there,” D’Andrade told Kaieteur Sport yesterday.
The seasoned distance athlete and Johnson currently reside and compete in Trinidad with Ballantyne, who is one of the Caribbean’s most decorated distance athletes. The duo is on the attack ahead of the South American 10k next month.
