The Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) in an effort to tighten up on the lax behaviour of its affiliates during boxing cards has implemented stringent rules to address the situation. The ruling body has read the riot act and is now prepared to employ stringent measures in keeping with its constitutional mandate.
With immediate effect, the GBBC will be enforcing the regulations to regularize the local operational standards in keeping with international expectations. Failure to comply will result in the levying of fines and/or disciplinary actions against defaulting stakeholders.
Secretary of the GBBC, Trevor Arno said all boxers and trainers contracted to participate in boxing cards are required to report to the officials’ table at least one hour prior to the start of the card. During this time, boxers and trainers must present their respective licenses to the director of bouts. Expired documents must be renewed prior to participation on the card. Failure to comply with this ruling would result in a 5% deduction for boxers as well as coaches purses.
Boxers failing to enter the ring when summoned will also be fined irrespective of the premature conclusion of preceding fights. Fighters are also instructed that all fights commence fifteen minutes after the conclusion of the preceding fight. Those contravening this rule will be fined 5% of their purse.
For championship fights, the contenders are required to enter the ring before the champion and the champion will be allowed to select the corner of their choice. For non title fights, a decision on which boxer will enter the ring first and the corner he occupies will be made on the night of the official weigh-in.
Disregard for these procedures would attract increased fines and further violations can lead to the imposing of bans or the disbarment of boxers and trainers from competing in GBBC future sanctioned boxing cards.
The director of bouts also has the authority to withhold boxers’ purses, who in his considered opinion, infringe the rules, contravene the Constitution of the GBBC or behave in a manner that brings the sport into disrepute.
The GBBC will be enforcing rigid rules to regain some measure of control pertaining to the management of the dressing rooms in accordance with international practices.
As such, only four persons including the trainer are allowed in the dressing rooms for championship bouts. For preliminary bouts 3 persons are allowed inclusive of the trainer.
If a trainer has more than one fighter participating on the card, the entire entourage would be accommodated in the same dressing room and those trainers managing two boxers will be allowed one extra person in the dressing room while trainers managing three boxers will be allowed two extra persons in the dressing room. A trainer managing more than three boxers will only be allowed extra personnel in the dressing rooms at the discretion of the dressing room supervisor.
Boxers are responsible for the conduct of the members of their entourage in the dressing Rooms and any deviation from these regulations will attract sanctions that may be deemed appropriate by the GBBC.
Also, with immediate effect, the GBBC will be enforcing the regulations enshrined in its Constitution with regards to personnel authorized to be in boxers’ corner and in the boxing ring during GBBC sanctioned bouts. The non adherence to these regulations will result in disciplinary actions against culpable persons.
During championship fights only four persons, including the chief second, are authorized to be in the boxer’s corner.
Further, only one of these seconds is authorized to enter the ring to manage the boxer between rounds while another is allowed to stand on the ring apron between rounds.
The other two seconds will remain on the floor next to the ring apron.
In the case of non titled fights three persons, including the chief second, are authorized to be in the boxer’s corner.
Only one of the seconds is authorized to enter the ring to manage the boxer between rounds while one second is allowed to stand on the apron of the ring between rounds. The other second will remain on the floor of the venue.
