Despite Front Scheme Amelia’s Ward one-point win against Central Mackenzie/Retrieve and Kara Kara combined Wednesday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club court, it was the latter that advanced to the semi-finals on aggregate.
Front Scheme needed to hand the Mackenzie team a heavy loss to beat them to the Final Four of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Inter-Block Basketball competition but instead Front Scheme merely won 67-66 in overtime.
Lawrence DeCosta scored 24 points while Kevin Joseph and Gavin Singal were the other players in double figures with 14 and 11 points for Front Scheme.
Regulation time ended at 59 apiece after halftime was also locked at 38 all.
Neil Marks had 28 points for Central Mackenzie/Retrieve and Kara Kara combined while Louis James and Jason Alonzo both scored 10 points in quarter-final stage of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) tournament.
The win was not enough to edge Mackenzie into the semi-final in Group ‘A’ of the initial ministry competition in the Mining Town. Both teams along with Back Scheme Amelia’s Ward ended the group’s round robin with one loss each.
Back Scheme secured its place in the last four when they thrashed Constab/Watooka and Richmond Hill combined 101-61 in the second game Wednesday night to end second in the group behind leaders on aggregate, Mackenzie.
Delbert Kitt scored 24 points for Back Scheme while Neil Simon had 20 points as Akeem Kanhai and Ruel McKinnon finished with 15 and 14 points respectively for the unit that had upstaged favourites Front Scheme in their first game.
Constab/Watooka/Richmond Hill combined had Ronnel McPherson with 23 points while Omald Bakker scored 15 points, Kenneth Charles 12 and Jeffrey LaRose 10 points as the team exited the 2009 version of the competition.
The other quarter-final games will be played tonight and according to number of wins that were amassed, Christianburg/Blueberry Hill combined and Silvertown/Scheme are likely to top Group ‘B’ and decide the Final Four in the process.
Christianburg/Blueberry Hill combined will play Silvertown/Scheme to decide which one places first and who takes second in the group while Canvas City/One Mile/Half Mile are to compete against Block 22/Canvas City in game two. Kaieteur Sport understands that the semis will be played tomorrow. (Edison Jefford)
