NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE Marlyn Lindi and her younger reputed husband, Paul Edghilo, the parents of the burnt Angoy’s Avenue girls remain in police custody as ranks continue their probe.
Natashia Lindi, 11, a first form student of the Vryman’s Erven Community High School, and her eight-year old sister Kimberly Lindi of St. Aloysius Primary School both suffered second degree burns under questionable circumstances.
The children were admitted to the New Amsterdam Hospital about 07:30 hours on Wednesday. A source indicated that the older Lindi sustained 25 percent burns between her waist and mid thigh, some sections of the arms and other parts of her body. Kimberly’s injuries were said to be extended over six percent of the upper region of the body.
A visit to the institution, yesterday, saw the younger lass sobbing for her mother while a relative attempted to feed her. Her sister was more composed and just watched on helplessly in pain.
Working on the case are officials from the Probation Department in New Amsterdam. They had alerted the police of the incident on Wednesday.
According to a source from the Guyana Police Force, the mother eventually visited the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam to report the incident.
According to reports, the father is known for his short temper and abusive behavior. On the day in question, the children had not yet risen from their slumber when they parents had a fracas.
It is alleged that the paternal figure, in an attempt to assault their mother, kicked a lit kerosene stove and it ended up in the direction of the girls.
They were asleep on a mattress on the floor. It caught fire and the girls were burnt in the process. The other two siblings were unharmed.
The issue between the parents had its genesis the day before and the man left the home.
When he returned early Wednesday morning, he was upset that his reputed wife had not yet completed the preparation of his breakfast and the argument continued.
Up to late yesterday Thursday the matter was not reported to the Guyana Fire Service.
And the cause of the fire at Lot 55 Stanleytown in New Amsterdam which badly damaged a dwelling house about 20:35 hours on September 21, is yet to be determined.
The wooden structure was occupied by 57-year-old Charles Grant.
At the time of the incident he was said to be away from his place of abode.
However, detectives of the Guyana Police Force are working on a theory that stolen electricity could have led to the calamity.
