Anton Evans, the man who was remanded by magistrate Faith Mc Gusty, last Monday for allegedly raping three young women at Buck Hall, received a two-year jail term for escaping from lawful custody, yesterday.
The 21-year-old Evans appeared before Magistrate Mc Gusty at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court to answer both charges. He was not required to plead.
However, after a summarily application, he was to have his unlawful escape matter heard summarily. To that charge he pleaded guilty.
According to a police report on June 5, 2006, while in police custody and while being escorted to Essequibo for his trial, Evans who was handcuffed to another prisoner, made his daring escape when the other prisoner requested to use the toilet facility aboard the M.V. Malali.
Evans allegedly jumped into the Essequibo River, and was successful in eluding the police until his recapture last Thursday, at Buck Hall.
When asked by the Magistrate about the reason for his escape Evans told the court that he was’ frustrated.’
On Monday last, at Charity, Evans appeared before Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty to answer three charges of rape and was remanded to prison until October 19.
It was alleged that on September 17, last, at Buck Hall, Evans was accused of raping three women aged 18, 19 and 21. He reportedly tried to escape, but was nabbed by police officers.
Reports are that on Thursday last the three women, all of whom worked at a night spot on the island, retired to bed. They were reportedly awakened around 2:00 hours by a man who had entered their room by removing some louvers pane at a window on the building.
Evans who at the time purportedly pointed a gun at the women ordered them not to make any noise or he would shoot. He was said to have subsequently ordered them to strip, after which he proceeded to rape all three.
Later that morning the matter was reported and several hours later police ranks detained the suspect who identified himself as Antonio Benjamin.
However, after Evans was brought by police ranks at Anna Regina police station for questioning a detective recognized the man as a remanded prisoner who had eluded police two years ago.
After intense questioning, Evans admitted to ranks and revealed his real name. He however denied raping the young women and told the ranks a more conflicting side of the story.
The man reportedly told investigators that he and one of the women were engaged in a conversation earlier in the night and had agreed to ‘meet up’ later.
Evans said that when he went to meet with the woman the other two saw him and all agreed to have sex with him.
