KNews Pressmen murders…
After months of lengthy exchanges and deliberations, one of the two accused in the murders of five Kaieteur News pressmen, has been committed to stand trial in the High Court.
The number one accused, Dwight Da Silva, was yesterday read his fate by Magistrate Nigel Hawke at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
His co-accused, Quincy Evans, was freed.
In his ruling, Magistrate Hawke told the court that after listening to submissions, it was clear that a prima facie case has been made out against Da Silva.
As such he will be committed to stand trial in the High Court for murder under Section 65, in the Criminal Law Procedure Act 10:10.
The magistrate further informed Da Silva that his matter will be heard at an available date in the next sitting of the Demerara Assizes, in January 2010.
After making his ruling, the Magistrate asked the accused who stood with a blank stare, whether he had anything to say.
“My Worship I am innocent of the charge,” was Da Silva’s response, after a brief conversation with his lawyer, Compton Richardson.
In relation to Da Silva’s co-accused, Quincy Evans, Magistrate Hawke told the court which had a handful of persons – including several relatives of both accused – that a prima facie case had not been made out against him. Hawke said after listening to the submissions, that the prosecution failed to build a case against Evans, and as such, the charges against the accused are to be discharged.
Having been told this, Evans was escorted out of court back into police custody since he has several other pending charges, some for murder.
Da Silva, Evans and Jermaine Charles called ‘Skinny’ now deceased were charged for the murders of Eion Wegman, Richard Stuart, Mark Maikoo, Shazim Mohamed and Chetram Persaud.
The men were cold bloodedly slain on Tuesday August 8, 2006 at the Kaieteur News Printing facility at Eccles Industrial Site.
