No. 11/Bath Village softball cricket team of West Coast Berbice played unbeaten to win the second edition of the Norman Singh Memorial Sports Club (NSMSC) inter village 8 overs softball cricket competition, which was played last Sunday at the NSMSC ground, No. 6 Bel Air West Coast Berbice.
Six teams participated in the one day competition namely No. 8 and 9, No.7, No. 11/ Bath, No. 3, No. 2 and host Custom Warriors of No. 6.
In the first game which was played, No. 3 took care of Customs Warriors beating them by 19 runs. No. 3 batted first and reached 72-6 in their allotment of overs with Anil Totaram making 25. Bowling for No. 6 Tillack Dharry took 2 wickets. The host in reply could only reach 43-6 in their overs. Bowling for the winners, Rasheed Khan took 3-6 and Freddy Williams 2 wickets.
In game two, No. 2 village won from No. 7 village by 9 runs. Scores in that game were No. 2 made 58 for 5 with Rasheed Singh contributing 15. Bowling for No.7 Brijesh Brijmohan picked up 3-10. In reply No. 7 could only muster 49-4 when their time expired. Bowling for No. 2 Patrick Bobby picked up 2 wickets with Andrew Kenny being unbeaten on 20.
In the final first round game, No. 11/Bath defeated defending champion No. 8 and 9 by 23 runs. Batting first No. 11 rattled up 67-3 with Omesh Singh compiling 28. No. 8 in their turn at the wicket were held at bay as they reach 44-8. Bowling for No. 11 Ajay Persaud and Brentnol Nurse took 2 wickets each.
No. 3 then drew a bye to the finals leaving No. 11/Bath and No. 2 to contest the semi-finals. In the semi-final, No. 2 took first strike and made 48-4 with Patrick Bobby 17. Bowling for No. 11 Ajay Persaud picked up 2 wickets. No. 11/Bath in reply hustled to 49-2 in 6.2 overs with Michael Persaud hammering an unbeaten 28 while Navin Sukhoo contributed 20.
In the final which was played immediately after, No. 11/Bath then hammered No. 3 to secure a commanding 10 wicket victory. No. 3 took first strike and could only muster 40 in their allotment of overs as no batsman made any significant contribution. No. 11/Bath in reply went on the rampage as the blasted 46-0 in a mere 5.3 overs with the openers Michael Persaud and Ajay Persaud having a jolly time each with an unbeaten 22.
At the end of the competition the No. 11/Bath team were presented with $25,000 while No. 3 received $12,000 for their effort.
The Best batsman on show was Michael Persaud of No. 11/Bath, while the best bowler on the day was Rasheed Khan of the No. 3 selection with 3-6. They both received trophies donated by managing Director Balram Singh.
The presentation was done by Ghansham Singh manager of the complex and coordinator of the event.
Singh later told the media that the activity was part of the organisation’s effort to keep the youths occupied. He said that the next activity will be held on Saturday September 26 when another competition will be played.
Other activities such as Football, Volleyball and other outdoor sports will be staged at the venue shortly.
