A football fixture at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue turned horrific on Tuesday night when a man opened fire on a crowd resulting in five men being shot.
The men shot are Jason Marks, 17; Oriley Small, 25, Terrence Edwards, 15; Dwayne Wharton, 17, and Jamal Thomas, 17.
The incident reportedly stemmed from two men betting on the game of football between Terrence Bar and White Castle Fish Shop.
According to information the men placed the bet at the beginning of the match, which was the final of the Corner Kick Inter Pub Futsal Competition.
Kaieteur News learnt that a bet of $100,000 was made between Small and the shooter that shot Vibert Weekes.
Small’s friend, score he would have received the said amount. The deal reportedly went sour after Weekes was issued a red card early in the second half of the game and did not score a goal.
This reportedly angered Weekes whose money it was that Small used to enter into the deal with the shooter.
After his sending off Weekes approached the shooter to collect the $100,000 explaining that he did not complete the game.
However he was denied and was told by the shooter he lost the bet.
Weekes became infuriated and reportedly assault the shooter and the match was abruptly suspended after the fight started.
The owner of the business establishment, who is said to be the shooter waited outside the Gymnasium and upon seeing Weekes and his ‘crew’, opened fire sending the crowd scampering for cover.
When the gunshots ended five bystanders were shot and the intended target, Weekes escaped unhurt.
Small was shot several times in the chest and leg and is now a patient at a private hospital.
Marks was shot in his right foot, Edwards in his right side buttocks, Wharton was shot in his left leg and Thomas was shot in the chest.
They are now patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
After the incident the shooter reportedly drove away leaving the confusion and the injured men behind.
The police in a statement issued yesterday stated that an argument ensued between Small and the suspect who had sponsored one of the teams over a wager and during this time it is alleged that another man handed the suspect a gun which he fired several times into the crowd which had gathered.
The shooting resulted in injuries to the spectators and subsequently fled the scene.
Some time later he was accosted by another man who assaulted him and has since been admitted to a city hospital.
