– Saeed Ali heads juniors
Junior Champion Taffin Khan has assumed the early lead in the National Qualification Chess Tournament which got underway last weekend at the Kei-Shars Sports Club on Hadfield Street, Georgetown.
Khan and Ronuel Greenidge are both tied on three points apiece; however Taffin Khan is in the lead based on the Median Buchholz tie breaker. Greenidge occupies the second position, while Loris Nathoo is in third.
In other highlighted games of the day, Learie Webster defeated Wendell Meusa, Loris Nathoo defeated Errol Tiwari, while Chino Chung defeated Shiv Nandalall.
The points standing after three rounds, Taffin Khan and Ronuel Greenidge on three points, Loris Nathoo two and a half, Learie Webster, Chino Chung, Omar Shariff, Wendell Meusa, Michael Pereira, Errol Tiwari, David Khan, Ronald Roberts and Irshad Mohamed all on two points apiece, Brian Thompson on one and a half, while eight other players are tied on one point apiece.
The junior category attracted some thirty players. Taking the early lead is Saeed Ali, who is undefeated after four rounds. He is closely followed by Rashad Hussain, Raan Motilall and Sham Khan who are all on three and a half points.
Points standing after four rounds, Saeed Ali on four points, Rashad Hussain, Raan Motilall, and Sham Khan three and a half, Kana Khan, Aslam Hussain, Stanley Ming, Jan Carrington and Crystal Khan on three points, Cecil Cox two and a half, while nine players are tied on 2 points apiece.
The senior category attracted twenty three of Guyana strongest chess players, while the junior attracted thirty players.
The tournament continue this Friday for the seniors at 17:30 hours at the Kei-Shars Sports Club, while the junior will continue this Sunday at the same venue from 10:30 hours.
