Police revealed yesterday that a man whom they detained at Bartica on Monday has confessed to murdering female shopkeeper, Juliet Forde, at Mahdia two years ago.
Police sources said that the suspect, who is reportedly from Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara, was arrested around 13:00 hrs on Monday at the Kool Breeze Wharf, Bartica.
According to a release, police were conducting a random search on passengers entering Bartica at the Kool Breeze Wharf when they found a 9mm pistol with 29 matching rounds and six grammes of a substance suspected to be cocaine.
Three men were arrested.
“Following up on investigations into a recent robbery under arms at Puruni Landing, Mazaruni in June, 2009, during which 122 ounces of raw gold was stolen and a murder in March of 2007 at Mahdia, information received has led to the arrest of a male suspect who is also in custody at Bartica.
“One of the four suspects so far arrested has confessed to the murder. Charges will be instituted shortly.”
According to reports, Juliet Forde was at her shop when the suspect slashed her throat while attempting to rob her.
He then fled the scene.
