Local women lacking fundamentals – Davis
By Edison Jefford
The South Carolina Ladies’ All-Star Basketball team wrapped up a very hectic tour of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana yesterday when they departed for the United States with Coach Larry Davis critiquing women’s basketball here.

Davis is of the view that the national women’s team suffered heavy losses against them in the two games that they played because there were fundamental disparities between them and the Guyanese women, which were clearly evident.
“Fundamentals is the only deficit in Guyana…basketball fundamentals, I mean they just don’t have them. However, they are great athletes that have dexterity though,” Davis told Kaieteur Sport in his post mortem of the tour.
He admitted that the local women did better than was expected but believes that the local coaches really need to start looking at more fundamental drills for them. Davis said that is the reason behind his sessions here with coaches.
The South Carolina All-Stars team thrashed Guyana 2-0 in a three-game series when they won game one 61-35 and replicated that performance with a 99-50 whipping Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall after arriving Friday.
Apart from the games, which were more-or-less a chance for the local women to compete against a quality side, the visiting team also hosted clinics for players in Georgetown and Linden while Davis had workshops for the coaches.
“I think they did better than I expected because when you don’t have fundamentals it can really hurt you and they learnt that. They have to start working on the fundamental things and I instilled that in the coaches,” Davis informed.
“Our ladies (SC All-Stars) know the fundamentals of the game and I think folks will look at the games and say they lost heavy but what we were really doing was exposing them to structured basketball,” the US-based coach continued.
He explained that the right administrative techniques have to also be included so females can benefit from similar constitutional rights as males. There is a constitutional clause in the US that balances the male and female equilibrium.
Davis had indicated to this newspaper after his arrival in Guyana that his assignment was to present a successful model for the local women. Asked if he had accomplished the goal the coach said “absolutely” in an emphatic manner.
