The Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) are currently organizing as many tournaments as possible to give local scrabble queen, Abigail McDonald as much practice as possible as she prepares to travel to Malaysia to compete in the World Scrabble Championships.
Consequently, GASP would be staging a two tier tournament for players rated among the top ten and those that fall within the intermediate category at the Courts Sports Club, Main Street, Georgetown. .
This means that McDonald would be competing against the likes of former national champion, Fred Collins, James Krakowsky, Moen Gafoor and Floyd Carmichael among other top seeds.
Despite her current ripping form, McDonald would have to be wary of her challengers especially since Collins seems to have recovered his old form. He successfully challenged McDonald and carted off the spoils in last weekend’s Insurance Broker’s Lien tournament. Carmichael could also pose some problems for McDonald on his day and she would have to employ all her wits to stave off his challenge. Add James Krakowsky, Moen Gafoor and Leon Belony and it is apparent that McDonald would have to pull out all the stops to emerge victorious.
The intermediate tournament could see such players as Maurice Munroe, who has improved tremendously in recent times, Ruby Cummings, a mean player that could create a few upsets, Lindener, Grace Hercules who almost upset McDonald in their second round match last weekend and banker, Paul Adams.
Any of these players could emerge victorious and it is anybody’s guess who would cart off the honours in this department.
Players are urged to be at the venue by 09:30hrs for registration and a subsequent start as 10:00hrs sharp.
