Dear Editor,
The latest attack by President Bharrat Jagdeo against Mayor of Georgetown, His Worship Hamilton Green, and his attempts to blame exclusively the Georgetown City Council for the pile up of garbage in the city is at the least reckless and absurd and demonstrate the steps he is taking to render the local government system irrelevant.
For Jagdeo to meet with City officials behind the back of Mayor Green because Jagdeo declared him to be “obsolete” makes a mockery both of the Office of Mayor and the process which led to Green’s election to the position. The meeting was also insulting and an embarrassment to those officials who were invited and who turned up in fear of being victimized.
Further, his actions have sent clear signals to citizens who believe they can make a contribution to the development of their communities via the local system that they would be better off distancing themselves from something which is treated with tremendous disrespect by the country’s Head of State.
Jagdeo in his obsession to embarrass the Mayor and councillors of Georgetown seem not to be aware that by starving the Council of funds he is contributing to the development of a serious health hazard which has grave implications not only for the citizens of Georgetown but also for those living in close proximity to it.
Additionally, he also seems to be ignorant of the fact that his government has a moral and legal obligation to provide the citizens of this country with a health system of a high standard.
Instead of ranting and raving like the petulant child he sounds like he should understand that all he had done previously in support of the council’s work had nothing to do with benevolence on his part but was in keeping with the oath he and his ministers took when they assumed office as the government of Guyana.
The WPA believes that Jagdeo’s failure to act with the urgency that was required was deliberate and cannot be excused. It must not be forgotten that he waited until the lives of thousands of people in this country were jeopardized before initiating action to relieve the dangerous situation.
Finally, WPA congratulates the Leader of the Opposition and of the PNCR, Robert Corbin, on his rejection of Jagdeo’s ridiculous proposal to replace elected councilors by a group of his hand picked lackeys.
WPA, like Raphael Trotman, Leader of the AFC, is also of the view that as Jagdeo feels free to speak about the absence of leadership in the council and calls for the establishment of an Interim Management Council (IMC) to manage the affairs of the City of Georgetown, he should listen to the voices of the people who believe that he has failed to give Leadership to Guyana and are demanding the establishment of an IMC to manage the affairs of the state.
