Houston man hit by car, hospitalised

There seems an influx of accidents occurring on the roadways resulting in people being hospitalised with broken limbs and other injuries.
On Monday night just before 18:30hrs, 46-year-old Bharat ‘Popo’ Khelawan, of 21 Houston Housing Scheme, was hit by a car as he attempted to cross the Houston Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
One witness said, “I see Popo crossing the road and when I look up the road they had a police vehicle coming down. Right behind it was a grey car and that car tried to overtake the police vehicle and slam into ‘Popo’ and pitch he up in the air.”
The woman recalled that she had only a week ago witnessed an accident that resulted in the death of another man. She said, “When the car hit he like it break he foot and injure he head but is a lucky thing the police was there so he get rushed to the hospital.”
At the hospital, Kaieteur News saw the accident victim on a gurney (stretcher) awaiting medical attention while his relatives stood around him.
Injured but conscious, with a bruised and bloodied face, he could not move his right leg but was adamant that he had to “cut cane tomorrow” (yesterday).
The father of two, according to hospital reports, sustained injuries to the head and right foot. He was treated and subsequently admitted to the Male Surgical Ward where he is recovering.
The driver who hit him was taken into police custody on Monday night at the Ruimveldt station and his car was impounded.
