GuySuCo achieves over 10,000 tonnes in production for the 5th consecutive week

For the fifth week in a row, the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has recorded production exceeding 10,000 tonnes.
Such a milestone was last achieved during the second crop of 2004, between August and September.
A statement from GuySuCo stated that this achievement comes at a time when the corporation is aggressively seeking to increase production, through the implementation of several initiatives.
Among those initiatives is an improvement in communication of the company’s operational objectives and expectations between management and workers, across its eight estates.
Grinding for the second crop commenced at the end of July and is expected to last for 20 weeks.  During this period, just over 160,000 tonnes of sugar should be targeted.
Resulting from last week’s production, workers at five estates earned one additional day’s pay as incentive for achieving their weekly production target.
The estates to benefit were Skeldon, Albion, Rose Hall, Blairmont and Enmore.
Apart from production, the Corporation is keenly focused on its replanting programme, which as of last weekend stood at 2026 hectares with an additional 651 hectares available to plant.
At the said time, land preparation activities are also progressing with some 3770 hectares completed to date, while tillage of another 1034 hectares is currently in progress.
GuySuCo is also placing special emphasis on its Skeldon Expansion Programme, where for the year a total of 229.6 hectares has been completed to date. Private cane farmers have brought under cultivation an additional 338.4 hectares.
To further accelerate its overall expansion programme, the Corporation has enlisted the services of several contractors who commenced work at the start of the second crop at the Skeldon, Albion, Blairmont, East Demerara and Wales Estates.
