Quick action by public-spirited persons, who were later backed up by the Guyana Fire Service, averted a major disaster when fire struck at a stall on Orange Walk, Bourda, around 21:00 hours last night.
The firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the stall owned by Carol Trim, of Sophia, and prevented it from ravaging through the nearby stalls.
Although significant damage was done to the interior of Trim’s stall, which is known as Crystal Corner, she could count herself lucky that most of the stock only suffered water damage.
Except for a pet dog, no one was in the stall when the fire started.
Fortunately, the dog was rescued by public spirited persons.
Eyewitnesses recalled seeing smoke billowing from the roof of the stall and immediately went into action to extinguish it, while others contacted the Fire Service.
“All I hear is an explosion and then fire,” said Sydney Hall, the owner of the stall immediately next to Trim’s.
Another eyewitness told this newspaper that he was sitting a short distance away when he saw the smoke.
He said that he and some other coconut vendors rushed with buckets of water and began pouring it on the building.
According to the man, earlier he had seen Trim’s daughter in the stall and he called out her name but got no answer.
He said that he did not know that the dog was still locked inside.
Trim, who minutes before the fire had returned to the city from the interior, got the shock of her life when she arrived at her stall.
“Me daughter just left the shop to come and pick me up. I call she and tell she come by the park fuh me. When we coming somebody call me on me cell phone and tell me the place on fire. I come and see this,” the distraught stallholder said.
She could not say what might have caused the blaze and will have to wait until today to estimate the extent of her losses.
