– wreaths dropped over area
Aided by specially-trained dogs, a U.S. search and rescue team ventured into the Mazaruni jungle last August, in the hope of finding a Beechcraft King Air plane and three crew members who vanished a year ago.
But, like others before them, they found no trace of the plane or victims, and the companies which organised the search have finally acknowledged that the victims may never be found.
A spokesman for Prometheus Resources Guyana Inc. told Kaieteur News yesterday that the search-and rescue team from Virginia, USA, comprised ex-army personnel who were aided by three cadaver dogs, which are trained to locate bodies.
He said that the team finally gave up after scouring the area for two days.
The team members then dropped wreaths over the area where the plane is believed to have disappeared.
The search and rescue operation was sponsored by Prometheus Resources Guyana Inc., Dynamic Aviation Group and Terraques Ltd. The companies had continued to conduct aerial and ground searches long after local officials had announced that they were cancelling the search.
Kaieteur News was told that a spokesperson from one of the groups notified the families of the missing men that no more attempts will be made to locate their bodies.
The Beech King Air N87V, chartered from Dynamic Aviation Group Inc. by Terraques Ltd., disappeared on November 1, 2008, while conducting geographical surveys in the Mazaruni area for the uranium mining company, Prometheus Resources Guyana Inc.
Missing and presumed dead are US pilot Wes Barker, First Officer Chris Paris, also from the US, and Canadian technician Patrick Murphy.
According to a report, the plane was scheduled to operate in the Chi-Chi/Imbaimadai area for four hours 30 minutes. They had fuel endurance for five hours 30 minutes.
But the report stated that the crew failed to report their position to air traffic control as required.
Several futile attempts were subsequently made to contact the aircraft.
On November 17, after 200 hours and 28,260,000 miles of aerial search, the official aerial and ground search was finally called off.
However, a team organised by Prometheus continued to scour the Middle Mazaruni jungle for the crash site.
They were assisted by InternetSAR.org, a US-based group which scans images of potential crash sites posted on the internet to look for missing planes.
