The head of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) says there is need for a new marketing strategy for Guyana, as the country looks to boost tourist arrivals.
Renata Chuck-A-Sang, who runs the Dutch Bottle Café in downtown Georgetown, while serving as the Association’s president, reasons that marketing Guyana is a very challenging task. However, she said it is time that Guyana formulates a strategy to market Guyana and “action” the strategy.
Speaking at the Association’s Annual General Meeting, Chuck-A-Sang dismissed the perception that marketing Guyana should be left to stakeholders in the tourism sector.
“Marketing Guyana effectively will bring opportunities to every sphere of business…everybody should have a vested interest in marketing Guyana,” she stated.
She said there is a need to promote what opportunities exist in Guyana particularly for trade, investment and tourism.
“We need to sell ourselves better not only to external markets but locally to potential clients who are already in the country,” she stated.
Chuck-A-Sang pointed to the country’s push for a Low Carbon Development Strategy, “which effectively tells the world that we want not only to be environmentally responsible for ourselves but we are willing to share our bounty with the world.”
She said that the President has been very effective at raising Guyana’s profile on the world’s stage, but “we need to build on that by filling in the rest of the picture so that a more balanced picture of Guyana can be presented.”
“Each of us has the potential to be an ambassador for Guyana,” Chuck-A-Sang declared.
She said the image of Guyana that is presented to the outside world is very unpleasant, and she knocked the media for painting that picture.
“There is therefore an urgent need to present a more balanced picture of Guyana,” she stated. But Chuck-A-Sang also took a dig at players in the sector saying they need to become more proactive.
“For every negative email we receive from family and friends for instance, respond with a good news story from Guyana.
“Post positive information on your websites, your Facebook page etc. about ordinary people doing remarkable things.
Ensure that the media is aware of the positive activities occurring here through press releases and invitations for them to see for themselves,” she urged the Association’s members.
Chuck-A-Sang said that security is of major concern to stakeholders in the tourism sector and called for a security sector reform.
“Unless we can gain control of our crime situation we will continue to be challenged in tourism and when we market Guyana,” she stated.
“Neither I nor the board alone can market Guyana to put more warm bodies in our hotels, restaurants, nightclubs or on our tours. But together I am assured we can,” Chuck-A-Sang stated.
