Score thrice against Rosignol
By Edison Jefford
Linden’s Topp XX rebounded from a surprising defeat against Bartica’s Liquid Gold last weekend with a 3-1 drubbing of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) National League leaders, Rosignol United in Linden Sunday night.
Delon McAllister opened the account for Topp XX in the 15th minute while Jamie Wilson and Jamaine Caster scored in the 60th and 90th minutes respectively as the FIFA ‘Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF’ project continues.
Clifford Campbell scored the solo goal for Rosignol United in the 3rd minute off a penalty shot when Ruel Williams got the whistle for reckless tackling. Rosignol had wins against Victoria Kings 2-1 and Buxton United 2-0 previously. With those two wins and leading the GFF National League, the team from West Berbice entered Sunday night’s game as the favourites but they were completely outplayed when Topp XX went on the attack after a superb first goal.
McAllister collected the ball from a scrimmage just outside the 18 yard box on the West side of the Mackenzie Sports Club ground and fired a rocket-like shot that beat a diving effort from Rosignol’s custodian, Joel Singh.
The goal ignited Topp XX forwards but better defence prevailed at midfield with both the teams content to just exchange possession. Rosignol got the opportunity to go ahead but a well placed header from Jolyon Bishop went astray.
Topp XX immediately responded with their attack against Rosignol’s suspecting defence when Wilson got a thru-pass from midfield that he retrieved and carefully fired a missile that hit the top bar and ricocheted out of bounds.
The score-line at halftime remained 1-1 but the first half hour in the second half belonged to Topp XX in an all out offensive attack that was aggressive. McAllister narrowly a flat shot from just inside the six yard box in the process.
Topp XX continued to enjoy most of the possession as Rosignol seemed out of sorts with West Berbice team disjointed from their previous performances. The Linden side pressed on every possession and pressured Singh at will.
The perfect opportunity came when Wilson placed his header to the right of the keeper at the top of the 18 yard box and fired a long shot that had enough legs to outrun Singh, who chased the shot after the header had beaten him.
The goal placed Topp XX up 2-1 and loud applause of appreciation greeted the team that had lost to surprise entrants Liquid Gold 1-0. The club gave Linden fans something to be grateful for with a quality display of football.
Rosignol chased down almost every possession and got an opportunity to equalise around the 35th minute when Kelron Kingston fired a shot that hit the top bar and came back into play from just outside the box before he was fouled.
The desperate attempt was the closest Rosignol, another surprise entrant into the contest, got to scoring in the last ten minutes of the game. Topp XX on the other hand was not too contented with the already established 2-1 lead.
Caster got a pass after a brief cluster inside the box and did not hesitate to deliver the flat attempt along the ground. Surprisingly, the attempt, that did not seem threatening, caught Singh flat footed and found the back of the net.
Topp XX went up 3-1 and one minute later the game was called off.
The tournament will have some astonishing standings when that is released later this week.
More than likely, a tie or new leader is expected to emerge on the table.
