The recent visits by IRB Development Officer Scott Harland and his wife Charlene Bakke and West Indies Head Coach Joe Whipple seem to suggest that the Guyana Rugby Football Union is acting with some urgency in its quest to continue the development of the sport as well as leaving no stone unturned in its pursuit to successfully defend regional titles. Add to that the current stint by BOOST Coaches Chris Campbell and Adam Rae and the picture comes clearer that the GRFU is not taking lightly the past and current accomplishments of the male and female teams, while ensuring that a consistent pool of players are present to draw from.
Whipple, who has been retained as Technical Director of the national teams currently preparing for the North America and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Championships scheduled for November 14-15 in Mexico was in the country over the weekend where he laid down the programme designed for the teams’ preparations, held intensive interactive sessions with
the players as well as watched over the BEEP Test for both squads to ascertain their levels of fitness.
He also held discussions with the local coaches who will be tasked with the responsibility of implementing the programme.
According to Union President Noel Adonis, Whipple, additionally conducted some video sessions where past games involving Guyana was analysed to identify strengths and weaknesses for correction and reinforcement.
Meanwhile, not to be relegated, Harland and Bakke are here to give the schools programme a jump start and they paid a visit to Mae’s Academy to conduct sessions there.
Adonis said that Mae’s is one of the new schools now on board with the Union and they held discussions with the Management to have the sport played at the institution.
Harland also met with the two BOOST Coaches, observed a Sevens rugby trial game, met with senior coaches and held discussions with Whipple and executives of the Union.
He too, did some work with the national squads along with Bakke, who interacted with the Ladies.
