– cops seek driver of Canter truck
Police are trying to trace the driver of a Canter truck, who is believed to have fled the scene after fatally injuring a pedal cyclist at Farm, East Bank Demerara.
The victim, 36-year-old Rory Mohan of Grove, East Bank Demerara and of Howes Street, Charlestown, was found dead around 07:00 hrs yesterday on the western parapet of the East Bank Demerara public road.
Police retrieved Mohan’s bicycle from the scene as well as a trafficator and a side-view mirror, which appeared to have come from a Canter truck.
So far, police have been unable to locate any eyewitnesses to the accident, which is believed to have occurred late Sunday night or before daybreak on Monday.
A resident of Farm told Kaieteur News that he was in his yard around 07:00 hrs yesterday when he observed two men peering at something on the parapet outside his home.
The man said that he went outside and saw Mohan’s body lying on the parapet.
He also observed a bicycle, trafficator and a large mirror on the ground. The resident said that he then notified the police.
The body was identified at about 08:00 hrs when Rawle Mohan, the victim’s brother, happened to be driving past and decided to stop to see who the victim might be.
“I pulled over to check and when I check it was my own brother,” a tearful Rawle Mohan said.
He explained that his brother spends most of his time at Howes Street, where their ailing mother lives, so that he could take care of her.
However, he would also ride daily to Grove, East Bank Demerara, to check on a family property and to feed the dogs.
Relatives last saw Rory Mohan alive around 17:00 hrs on Sunday when he left Howes Street on his bicycle for Grove.
The victim’s brother and other relatives said they had expressed concern about him cycling on the East Bank Demerara at night.
Mohan is the third person to perish on the East Bank Demerara public road within the past three days.
On Saturday night, 72-year-old Mohamed Ali of Lot 78 Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara, was stuck down by a vehicle while riding home from a Masjid.
Around 05:30 on Sunday, 56-year-old Sarah Singh, of Lot 106 Grove public road, died after being struck by a pickup near Providence.
At least 17 road users have perished on the East Bank Demerara public road between January and yesterday.
