As part of the continued observance of Education Month, the library of the National Centre for Education and Research Development mounted an exhibition intended to highlight various educational materials utilised by the Education Ministry.
According to NCERD Librarian, Ms Joan Brooms, the exhibition is an annual feature which as far as possible focuses on the theme for Education Month. September has been designated Education Month and this year it is being observed under the theme ‘School attendance and punctuality: keys to education success.’
And since the theme is centered on school attendance and punctuality, the Education Ministry in varying ways will strive this month to highlight the need for the relevant stakeholders to adhere to the theme.
“Not only do we hope that students will be regular and punctual but that teachers will be on the job as it is very important that they be there,” said Grooms.
Several of the reading materials on exhibit yesterday included work produced by the staff of NCERD. In fact, a wide variety of materials and educational apparatus could be seen and even utilised by those venturing into the exhibition arena.
A section of the library was also dedicated to highlight the way of life of the Amerindian people as Amerindian Heritage Month is also being observed this month. “You will find that we have some things on display, we don’t have everything but most of what we know that the Amerindians use we have here.”
The Amerindian section, Grooms said, was created partly by NCERD staff and other education officials. The Amerindian exhibit includes art and craft and some foods, among other interesting items.
It took a staff of five persons to prepare the elaborate two-prong exhibition which will culminate on October 5.
“We worked long hours to prepare the exhibits…We had to liaise with anybody who we could have gotten help from. And we are particularly thankful this year because at a very late notice we had to seek the Amerindian Affairs Ministry and they were kind to have it done. Allied Art also assisted us,” Grooms noted.
While some teachers, members of the public and even NCERD staffers were on hand to view the exhibits yesterday, Grooms is optimistic that scores of school children and their teachers will make their appearance throughout the remainder of the exhibition.
