NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – The New Amsterdam Rotary Club, with the help of collaborative partners, offered an 11-year old Berbician a fighting chance in life.
On September 13, Vidyawattie Inderjeet and her mother departed for Canada where she would undergo corrective surgery for a congenital heart disease.
According to Public Relations Officer of the New Amsterdam Rotary Club, David Armogan, the local group contacted a sister Rotary Club in Pickering, Ontario, Canada, asking for assistance for the Crabwood Creek resident.
The volunteering Canadian hospital agreed to perform the surgery free of cost. This facility comes to the rescue of children from Third World countries.
Vidyawattie Inderjeet’s condition was detected by Rotarian, Dr. Narine Datt Sooknanan, during a medical outreach conducted by the New Amsterdam Rotary Club at Crabwood Creek.
Inderjeet’s family could ill afford the transportation costs to Georgetown.
The child was subsequently sent to the capital city for further evaluation and medical advice. There it was later determined that the procedure must be done overseas.
The club also assisted the mother and child to secure the Canadian visas. Pandit Suresh Sugrim, Head of the New Jersey Arya Samaj Humanitarian Mission provided the child’s air fare to Canada and the New Amsterdam Rotary Club solicited donations for the mother’s.
Those contributing were Bhoj Seecharran, Karan Ragoo, Krishendat Persaud, J.P Ghamandi and L. Harriprashad Sawmill.
The two are expected to remain in Canada, where they would be accommodated by a member of the Rotary Club of Pickering, Ontario, for at least six weeks.
Meanwhile, the New Amsterdam Rotary Club recently completed its wheelchair distribution exercise. Under this project, 42 persons derived benefits.
On World Literacy Day, the club also handed over a quantity of dictionaries to the Cumberland and All Saints Primary Schools.
