The man who was detained on Sunday in connection with the brutal slaying of a 17-year-old boy, who had his throat slashed with a cutlass, was up to press time yesterday still in custody assisting with investigations.
Darshan Ramnanan, of Lot 95 Bush Lot New Housing Scheme, collapsed and died on a roadway before he could receive medical attention on Sunday.
Up to late yesterday police were still looking for the murder weapon. Sources close to the investigation say that they are now working on the theory proffered by family members in some section of the media. The family had told this publication that the teen was allegedly killed by a fisherman.
A villager who was reportedly robbed by the teen some time back, allegedly gave the fisherman the cutlass to inflict the fatal wound.
According to the aunt, villagers had often wrongly accused her nephew of committing crimes in the community. An aunt of the victim told Kaieteur News that Ramnanan was still alive when she arrived at the scene.
However, she said he was ‘fluttering’ on the ground and bleeding profusely from a wound to his throat. According to the woman, other villagers were present but made no attempt to help.
The aunt said that she held her nephew in her arms to stem the bleeding while calling the Fort Wellington Police Station. According to the woman, a police rank arrived in a car about 10 minutes later, but allegedly told her that she would have to wait for an ambulance.
She said that no ambulance came and her nephew eventually died in her arms.
