Residents of the community of Bare Root, East Coast Demerara, should see water flowing through their taps by the end of next week.
This newspaper reported a week ago that the area has been without water for more than 20 years.
According to GWI’s Public Relations Officer, Timothy Austin, a contractor is currently laying pipelines along the streets which will ensure water is connected to homes.
According to him, residents should visit the GWI office in that area and make the necessary payments to ensure that water is supplied to their homes. He said that a fee of $1000 should be paid and that they should produce a copy of their land title.
The PRO is warning that in the absence of this the company will not supply water. He says ownership of land must be proven since GWI is guarding against persons occupying vacant land in order to get water.
This, according to him, will open the flood gates and set a dangerous precedent.
Austin is imploring residents to be patient with the water company since they are also working on supplying water to other areas with similar problems.
Residents had appeared resigned to fetching water for miles on a daily basis. They said they highlighted their plight many times and no one is looking after their well being.
Residents wondered if it was a transgression they committed that was causing them to suffer. According to them, the community was one of the first squatting settlements in Guyana and it is unbelievable that water has never flowed in that community.
They reported that GWI ‘dug-up’ the roads in the area at least four times to install pipelines and up to then no water flowed.
Negla Garraway, Chairman of the Community Development Council, had given up hope due to the many promises the community received.
She explained that she had journeyed to Georgetown many times to seek an audience with Housing and Water Minister, Irfaan Ali, but that she was always told that he was out or in a meeting.
She said that she was embarrassed to face the community who thought that she was ineffective.
When Kaieteur News spoke to some residents about the imminent water flow yesterday, they were cautiously optimistic, saying they hope it was not another promise to keep them quiet.
