…Digicel made my dream a reality
(By Brushell Blackman)
“Long before the Digicel Bimmer promotion was launched I often dreamed of owning a white BMW. Digicel has made my dream come through,” said barber Sherwin Azore.
On Friday night, the Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara resident outmanoeuvred a line up of 16 to win the second BMW valued at $24M each.
Yesterday the father of two, aged 31, said that while he was of the view that the letter E would be in a $1000 or $2000 card, he found his in a $500 card.
He said, “When I find the E it started to click and I started to think that maybe this white Bimmer in my dream is the one from Digicel.”
He said he collected his $100,000 for spelling Bimmer and made some friends and relatives happy.
Though not religious, Azore said that he began praying about the dream constantly and his confidence grew. “On competition night I thought it was going to be just five of us; then I hear is 16 and I get scared…They had a lot of men in the competition, too, but I prayed again and told God to let his will be done.”
On Friday night the 16 finalists dived into a sea of balloons in the centre of the field, grabbing as many canisters as possible. Azore managed to grab three.
“I grab two and put them in my jersey then I grab another one and as soon as I open it and pull out the paper it get hit out my hand,” he recalled. He said competition was a bit tougher because his sister Sherlene Azore was among the competitors.
While the others continued searching he decided to open one of the two canisters he had in his jersey and sure enough he found the slip that read “Zimm Zimmer you got the keys to the Bimmer.”
“When I realised that I had found the Bimmer slip I was ecstatic and realised that dreams do come through,” Azore said.
For his effort he also collected $10,000 plus a Mini Music system. His sister won a cellular phone, a Digicel gift bag and $1000. All of the other contestants walked away with prizes that they found in their canisters except for a Bartician whose expression showed that she had won nothing. Realising this, Azore brought a smile to the woman’s face by offering his $10,000 cash prize to her much to the approval of the audience.
Yesterday, Azore said that he has no plans as yet for the vehicle but he has not ruled out selling it. “Life for me remains pretty much the same except that I now own a BMW,” he said.
The car is slated to be handed over on Wednesday. Digicel Marketing Director, Donovan White, in thanking the public for their overwhelming support in the competition, said that his company remains committed to giving back to its customers and Guyana as a whole. The first Bimmer was won by Oliver Barnes of Diamond.
